Rocky Mountain's Thunderbolt 790 MSL BC Edition has the head of an XC bike with the heart and soul of a go-fast, boost off everything, trail shredder. Set up the British Columbia way: wide bars, big tires, stiff wheels, and premium suspension, this rig is ready to crush it all. The Smoothwall carbon frame is quick, agile, and lightweight, and is more than ready to charge hard on singletrack, as it's paired with a RockShox Monarch shock and a nearly perfect Pike fork delivering 120/130mm respectively. Short chainstays combined with a long top tube and slack head angle balance the bike's agility with just enough playfulness and aggression. The innovative Ride-9 adjustable geometry lets you optimize the bike's set up to your riding style, and the pro parts package seals the deal. SRAM's X01 1x11 drivetrain, Shimano's superb XT brakes, and tubeless-ready Stan's wheels with beefy Maxxis treads ensure you've got more than enough bike for getting zesty. Add a Race Face handlebar and a Reverb dropper post, and it's easy to understand the BC style of riding.
Rocky Mountain's Smoothlink suspension places the rear chainstay pivot above the rear axle, keeping the chain torque line parallel to the linkage. The benefit? The rear suspension is always active, bob-free, and delivers a wonderful bottomless feel, no matter what gear you're in.
|Rocky Mountain's Smoothwall Carbon construction creates a frame that is just as perfect on the inside as the outside. Rocky Mountain uses an inner mold to reduce excess resin, fibers and filler to create a super high fiber-to resin ratio. The result is an incredibly lightweight, stiff and responsive ride with incredible strength.|
Rocky Mountain's Ride-9 system enables you to customize the geometry and rear suspension rate with two interlocking inserts that allow for nine different positions.
By moving the shock forward, the geometry slackens and the suspension rate becomes more progressive, giving a nice ramp up for bottomless-feeling travel (image above, dotted line). It’s ideal for aggressive downhill riding. When you move the shock backwards, the geometry becomes quicker and the suspension more supple (blue line), which is great for ripping around technical singletrack and increasing climbing traction.
When you move the shock upwards (solid black) it allows lighter riders to run shocks at higher pressures, and moving the shock downwards (red line) allows a heavier rider to run lower shock pressures. So no matter what you weigh, this allows you to run the rear shock in the sweet spot with correct sag for smooth, consistent suspension.
